Gun laws do they work

Ok worked it out now, guess Dick and I inhabit different worlds, I have only very occasionally read of driveers deliberately driving at somebody.

As to his statement refuting my assertion of the gun use being deliberate, it just confirms what I was saying.

For item 1 there is no downside no guns no shooting.
For item 3 the upside is less pollution no jams better public transport healthier people etc etc

Item 2 does have the major downside of an ageing population with all that involves without the youngsters to .. Well do all that is required.

Why do people make such odd comparisons?

Brian

Brian,
Do you really believe that if we take away guns from the law abiding citizen there will be no shootings. You have to be kidding!!!

I do believe that vassago said everyone :D I'm not naive enough to think America can put the genie back in the bottle, but I don't like the attitude of the gun nuts on this thread.

Couldn't follow this as to which were my statements and which Dick's, and I don't understand what he wants to be an authority on, killing people?

Brian

My point Brian is that if you don't own a car then you probable haven't seen all the idiots out there that drive, and yes I probable am more of an authority on people killing people with cars. If you don't own a gun then you probable have not been around as many people as I have that have guns and use them in a law abiding way. It’s not that I want to be an authority it’s that I most likely been exposed to more situation that would give me an insight to reality. I have belonged to numerous gun clubs. I have been exposed to jerks that shouldn’t own a water pistol, and good law abiding sportsmen’s, and good neighbors. I have been trained in the military for save use of firearms in the protection of my country. There are people that will own guns and cars regardless of laws. Take a look at You Tube and go to bait cars, these people could care less where and from whom they steal a car. The same is true for those intend on killing, they will have a gun no matter what the law is. At 17 years old I entered Navy boot camp, coming from a little hick town. Half our company came from hick towns. The other half came from Chicago, IL. The first night there our instructor said come up right now and put all zip guns, brass knuckles, chrome plated bicycle chains etc. in the barrel and nothing will be said. If these items are found in your position after tonight you will be prosecuted. I though he was joking, until the 55 gallon drum was almost completely filled up. Reality is sometimes very sad. Have you ever been robbed Brian. Have you ever had someone threaten your life over road rage? Have you ever had a drunk threaten people with a ragged edged pipe and have numerous people expecting you to dis arm him? Well I have.

During my half century of driving before I voluntarily gave up this year because of my eye sight I saw many idiots on the road , I was probably one myself in my youth, however that does not make me an expert on how many people deliberately try to kill others with a car, which was the point at issue.

Also the argument concerning guns was that pointing a gun at a person and squeezing the trigger is a deliberate act, nothing you have said opposes that, to take the argument that the world is a dangerous place is to change the discussion. You make it sound so dangerous I wonder how I have got to within 2 days of my 71st without a scratch, mind you if guns were common here that might not be the case as the road rage nutter last year might have shot me, instead during his foul mouth tirade he merely kicked my car, and as he was wearing trainers and my car was built like a tank he limped off with a sore foot.

I'm ever so glad that I don't live in the US if your experience is normal.

Good point, I have thought of moving!
I am not surprise that you don't see the connection between cars, guns and idiots, but your probable still a nice person.

Not Typical, Really!!!!

Driven by gangs, drugs and guns, the bloodshed in President Obama's adopted hometown has resulted in a body count that exceeds the 312 murders this year in New York and 212 in Los Angeles, cities with populations dwarfing that of the Windy City. The toll here is up 25% from 2011: 391 through Sept. 23.
Last week, two men who had been beaten to death were found in the trunk of a car. The same day, a 17-year-old boy and a 33-year-old man were found shot to death. Those and others to be added to the official tally push the number of homicides in Chicago through September to the 400 mark for the first time since 2003. That year, 601 murders were documented here; annual totals have been in the 400s since 2009.

Crime Surge: The murder total in Orange County held steady until late 2005, when the current surge of killings began. In 2008, 123 people were slain in Orlando ...

City-data.com crime index counts serious crimes and violent crime more heavily. It adjusts for the number of visitors and daily workers commuting into cities.

According to the FBI, 617 people were murdered in Los Angeles County, California in 2010 making Los Angeles' murder rate 6.28 murders per 100,000 people. In 2009 this murder crime rate in Los Angeles was 7.09 per 100,000 people. Of those cities within LA County that fully reported crime to the FBI, a number have rates that are more than double this county average. Compton, for example, had a murder rate of 25.92 per 100,000 people. Inglewood's rate was 18.24.

Marion County Florida, where I live.
Between 1999 and 2008 there were 78,006 total crimes reported in Marion County, Florida (14,231 of them violent). Of the 7,801 crimes that occur a year in Marion County, almost half happen less than a mile from home. On average, someone is a victim of a crime in Marion County, Florida 22 times a day. This includes 100 murders, 1,004 rapes, and nearly forty-seven thousand thefts (including 4,143 motor vehicle thefts).

Where Iuse to live.

Woonsocket, Rhode Island has a violent crime rate of 418 incidents per 100,000 people. This compares with a rate of 245 in Rhode Island and a rate of 676 nationally. Lower numbers are better, indicating that fewer crimes happen per person in the population.

5 miles from my house

A teen triangle and bitter Facebook feud culminated in the savage killing of a 15-year-old Florida boy who was lured to his death by his former girlfriend, law-enforcement officials said.
Even the lawyer for one of the suspects called the killing "pretty damn depraved."
Seath Jackson was hit in the head and shot, but he still tried desperately to flee the home in Summerfield where the attack occurred Sunday, police said.
He was shot again and his body was placed in a bathtub, where his knees were broken so his body would fit in a sleeping bag. He was still alive, so he was shot again, and then his body was burned in a backyard fire pit, according to arrest documents. His ashes were shoveled into paint containers.

200 feet from where I am having coffee, right now
A man jumped over the counter at the Bank of America in Belleview, grabbed some cash and ran out the back of the building on Monday morning.
The man walked into the bank just before 11:15 p.m. He didn’t show a weapon or said anything before he jumped over the counter at the bank located at 5222 S.E. Abshier Blvd., said Lt. Terry Holland of the Belleview Police Department.
The robber was wearing what appeared to be a curly wig or dreadlocks. He is black, about 6-feet, two-inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds. He was wearing a white shirt, white shorts and a white baseball hat, which fell off during the incident.
No one was injured during the robbery. Police did not say how much money was taken.

I don't get it. Are you people saving I made up all those statics? Are saying all this crime doesn’t happen where you live?

No, not at all. Owing a gun carries responsibility. You kill an innocent person you need to pay the price. My point is that someone killing an innocent person is not reason to take everybody’s guns away, no more than someone killing an innocent person with a car is reason to take everybody’s car away. Of course, I am sure that we would disagree what an innocent person is, but that’s ok, I still think you are probable a pretty good guy.

Here is why I think it is a false analogy.

The use of a car is filled with legislation and supervision. Driving tests, seatbelts, speed limits, speed cameras, traffic cops, road markings, car insurance, laws of the road, car maintenance, no cell phones. The laws and supervision governing car use are very strict.

Compare that to home gun ownership and you'll see where I'm coming from. I can buy a shot gun from the local Walmart and away I go. No training required. I won't be challenged on my ownership either if my eyesight fails.

You talk of responsibility and yet we had an individual on this very thread saying he would arm himself against Colin. How does anyone supporting gun ownership account for this?

The reason to arm is fear. Fear makes you unstable. Fear and responsibility are not good bed partners.

Whether it leads to getting shot, getting punched, getting screamed at, having the door slammed in your face, etc... it's always a gamble.

I'm not sure how you think placing getting shot in the same category as getting screamed at is any help at all for you. If gunfire was really as likely as an argument then which civilized member of society wouldn't call for greater legislation?

I agree. He should have been charged and convicted based on the evidence we actually hear about. Unfortunately, there are plenty of people out there that shouldn't own a gun that do. There are plenty of people out there that have kids that shouldn't. There are plenty of people that own cars that shouldn't. Does taking them away from everyone solve anything?

This is the odd thing about this point of view. You may as well argue that people still die in car wrecks so why have seat belt law.

People owning guns that shouldn't, should be legislated for. In much the same way that reckless drivers are combated by traffic tickets.

However any talk of gun legislation brings outcry from the 'gun-nuts'. This is the problem. They don't want to face the societal consequences of their 'hobby', at all. In fact if anything, they want less legislation.

This is really why the car analogy is so poor.
