Gun laws do they work

Too many young people that are academically ill-prepared to realize their potential.

I'll teach my own grandson gun safety thank you - I've seen what the public education system produces.

Unbelievable attitude. How do you lose out with your grandson having to undergo compulsory gun training apart from your own ego? Any shortcomings in the education he receives you can make up for. Big deal.

However the numbers of people who would have received none get some form of education that might save lives. Yet you would throw this away because you don't "want to be told".

I guess you think legislation for electrical wiring in the home is idiotic for the same reason.

Simple attitude to understand really. I just want him to be able to use a gun better than I can do math :)

Most schools I know abandoned the experiment to teach kids to drive. Think of the consequences of a failed public school gun safety course.

FYI - I'm all in favor of a public gun safety course requirement, the local sheriff dept puts it I think, you have to have it before you get a hunting license. It's a good thing.

I would suggest seeking a proper gun handling course over 'home schooling' a child to shoot. Specially if you want the result of someone who is skilled in handling a firearm rather then someone who will interpret your habits developed over time.
Practice makes perfect after that, so you could go to the range and do some shooting together.

A proper gun handling course? Sounds like obama talk. I'm good letting a kid go to the safety courses to reinforce responsible habits but there's no way I'd leave it at that. I'm pretty sure my 'habits' are are just as good or better than than the guys teaching the classes. A kid learns when he see's and lives respect for guns day in and day out. Now if a kid doesn't have a experienced role model then I guess a course is all they have. In fact, if thats the only option I'd think twice about letting them around guns in the first place. I don't want to go in the woods where the only background a person with a high powered rifle has is a 'proper class'.

I'm sorry Ken but that not only sounds a bit boastful but also short sighted. It would appear that kids get hold of all sorts of weapons anyway, so let's have courses on gun handling and all the aspects of responsible gun ownership, perhaps people like you could volunteer to do it in your spare time.

'let's'

I see you're not bringing your A game lately Brian, been there ;)

Yeah, I noticed that Brian, several posts back in fact, you on decaf? Probably covered it in the past anyway :D

Why do you like to call me a yank? Doesn't that break some kind of uk name calling rule?

I remain confused.

I don't believe 'yank' is considered an insulting term, I used it as I thought that you were a southern American, I'm sorry if I offended you with that term, that was not my intention, I was intending to indicate that you might not have come across let's for let us , even if my IPad autocorrect does convert lets to let's .

Brian

Oh s**t I have just realised that yank is a north American, double sorry Ken, I must remember that I should not multi task, ie prepare lunch and post at the same time.

I'm guessing 'yank' would be a derogatory reference to an American in certain UK settings ;)

Not sold but I'll play the game:

So if I did something like suggest 'let us spend your money on blah, blah, blah..' and you said 'Let us?'. What do you think that would imply?

Ok, so let me point out that placing the question mark inside the quotes indicates an emphasis on 'us', as in you are asking why I should be helping you in spending your money.

I thought you guys were sharper than this Brian. Or could be you're still playing me. Yeah thats most likey it....

Sorry - have no idea what "Sounds like obama talk" means.

I would be worried that you feel the child is safer in the woods with other people who had their grandpa's "showing them how" as sufficient education for firearms.

I guess it's reasonable to see how some people don't understand the difference between a kid learning something from their father over years of reinforcement as opposed to taking a class.

obama talk = me and the rest of the government should be in charge of that

"Let's" is a term used in the US. I'm not sure why KenHigg was confused by that word.

As for "yank," you mentioned you thought he was a Southern American, which is why you called him a "yank." The interesting thing about that is here in America, it is the Northern Americans who are considered the yankees. Is it the opposite for the UK?
