With the great weather we have been having I've not been on the computer much and missed this thread .so can I add a belated congrats to Sel.

COBOL must be a decent language as it has stood the test of time, as FoFa said you probably wont need to use many of the facilities of JCL, and TSO is really just a vehicle for access to the mainframe for most users.

IMS will come as a bit of a shock to one raised on relational databases, but programming the MPPs is straight foreward, even if I can nolonger remember any of this stuff:D

Just think a whole new batch of acronyms to learn, incidentally a SAP was a Systems Analyst/Progammer when I was a lad.

I was going to take a class in COBOL about 8 years ago when I was still in school and everyone told me not to because it would be going away soon. Well, needless to say it's still hanging in there for all kinds of mainframe systems and I wish I had gone ahead and taken the class. Oh, well. They use it at my work for programming with the mainframe payroll system.

Rich and I only offer intelligent discussion, unfortunately some people find the truth a bitter pill. It is not in our nature to antagonise people.

I was forced to learn Cobol in school, about 4 yrs ago. Imagine that. I haven't used it for a single day since i've been out of college. The program is so ancient, nobody even talks about it anymore. I am actually tempted to take it out my resume cos it's beginnign to embarrase me

"Amazing Grace" was born in 1906. She went on the earn a Ph.D. in Mathematics at a time when women seldom went to college. She joined the WAVES in WWII. When she retired in 1986 at the age of 80, with the rank of Rear Admiral, she was the oldest member of the Navy on active duty. Along the way she also managed to pioneer the field of computing, becoming a programmer on the Mark I at Harvard Labs during WWII. She is recognized for her contributions to technology, has become known as the "Mother of Cobol," and, in 1969, was named the Data Processing Management Associations' "Man of the Year"! Grace Hopper died on January 1, 1992, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
