Well.... He's probably being spooked and scared by little bugs and spiders so a stick is probably appropriate.

'Or dear Hazel, look a spider - hurry, give me my stick and I'll defend us both - !!!'

:p

Our spiders must be quicker than yours, you'd never hit one with a stick, much easier to spray with hairspray.;)

Your yearly number is off by a factor of 10. Seemed like to big a number to me. But even the 37,500/day seems high. Where'd you see that stat?

hrmmm....couldn't find it again, so scratch those numbers. (maybe the 37,500 was weekdays? I know I had that number raw...)

anyways...

2,947,008 produced for retail sales in 2005 (AFT)
1,845,366 imported 2004 or 05. (US census)

around 43.5 million NEW guns between 1998 and 2005.

I hope my point still stands, we have WAY too many guns out there to effectively do anything about it. Any serious attempt at a ban would simply drive sales further into the black market.

Edit: found that 35 #. Here it is in context
"Approximately 37,500 gun sales, including 17,800 handgun sales, are completed every day in the United States."
its seems to be from 1997 or so, but upon inspection its from some Washington DC study, so those numbers are questionable, and poorly sourced. Much like my above post...

I also doubt the effectiveness of a handgun against a charging bear so why carry one, of course I'm assuming the weapon mentioned is a handgun since it was plastered to the hip.

Brian,
Ok, you got me, the above sentence is just dripping with sarcasm.

Those wierdo's aren't limited to Maine. I have a buddy who hunts wild boar with a bow. I honestly think he'd do it with a long knife if it was legal.

Agreed, they'll never get them all off of the streets. Any serious attempt to ban guns would lead to more than just increased black market sales, though. You can tell we're in trouble when the "right" side of the country is beginning to get pissed at the government. The "left" has been pissed at them for years, but they (largely) don't own the guns.

These people are just perverts, hunting not for food or animal husbandry but just trophy hunting for pleasure, what is good or clever about shooting an unsuspecting animal from a hide and then having it slowly bleed to death, at least rednecks guy with the long knive would be acting like a real man.

A couple points to make here.
1 - You carry a pistol fishing to kill snakes that won't go the other way. Sometimes the poisonous ones really want to bite you.

2 - You practice before you go hunting for one thing -
a. Kill the target fast, because you do not want it to run so far away you can't track it, therefore you lose the animal. MOST hunters consider that worse than a missed shot.
b. Some animals need to be dressed(gutted and cleaned) right away or the meat will taste bad when cooked.

What if they're simply going right to left or vice versa? Not wanting to go the other way hardly seems a capital offense -:p

This one slid under the radar during all the hub-bub of the SCOTUS decision about the handgun ban.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Horn_shooting_controversy

The guy shot 2 thugs who had broken into his NEIGHBOR'S house.
He did it in front of a plain clothes police officer, was not arrested,
and, on 30 Jun, a grand jury decided not to indict him. Of course, the bleeding hearts are feverishly working on a way to change the lawn. I doubt that'll happen.
