Tarrifs

@moke123 Can you explain why you choose to not understand the concept of reciprocity? In small words - If France puts tariffs on American wine, why is it wrong for America to put tariffs on French wine? There is no such thing as Free Trade. That would imply that there were no tariffs on any products for either side of an agreement. Free Trade sounds good on paper but in reality, the best we can hope for is Fair Trade where tariffs exist but are more reciprocal. They may tax our wine but instead of taxing their wine, we tax their flowers because their tax on our wine is not so high that it keeps the French from ever buying American wine and we feel that taxing their flowers is more beneficial to our budding flower industry.

And while we are at it, remember that the Chinese tariffs were put up because China was manipulating their own currency to change trade balances. They will EVENTUALLY pay for that when their internal demographics issues come home to roost, but for now they simply do not want to play on a level playing field. That is one reason why tariffs on the Chinese are still in force.

I never said tariffs were wrong, only it's us who pay them.

And we've explained to you how China bears the brunt of the cost of the tariffs. We've also explained why the Biden administration left those tariffs in place rather than cancelling them on "day 1" as they love to say.

On "day 1", Harris is going to "fix" all the things she broke while she was VP. That's priceless and stupid people believe her.

It appears that Trump still does not know how tarrifs work. The tarrifs are paid by the people beacus the tarrifs are past on to the consumer via higher prices for goods.

It appears the Biden / Harris administration does not agree with your assessment of tariffs.

  • The Biden administration has kept most of the Trump administration tariffs in place, and in May 2024, announced tariff hikes on an additional $18 billion of Chinese goods, including semiconductors and electric vehicles, for an additional tax increase of $3.6 billion.

You're against tariffs because of TDS.

Nobody done Economics 101? Tariffs disadvantage everyone. Say the US sets a 20% tariff on wine. French wine prices increase. Domestic vintners see the opportunity to increase prices to something short of 20%. All US wine consumers pay more for wine. French viniculturists lose out from sales.

Tariffs are not introduced for economic reasons. If governments impose tariffs for political purposes, their populace pays.

You also seem to conveniently ignore the reciprocity part of the equation. Do you believe that it is OK for Germany to add such high tariffs on American autos that American manufacturers cannot sell their cars there?

My point is that people are worse off through imposition of tariffs, unilaterally, bilaterally or multilaterally. Tariffs lead to economic inefficiencies.
You might take satisfaction in the fact that Germans are paying higher auto prices because of their tariff.

Here's info on tariffs. https://www.trade.gov/import-tariffs-fees-overview-and-resources.

What some of you don't get into your heads is that Trump is after FAIR Trade. If the US imports a billion dollars of goods from autos from Germany with zero tariffs don't you think they should import US autos duty free? Germany is giving their autos an advantage in their country allowing more German autos to be sold over US autos. Trump wants to encourage and increase production of US production and putting tariffs on foreign competition will help.

@Pat Hartman tbh most Europeans wouldn't buy a American car because they don't suit the roads over here, aren't as well built as a German car, and we buy cars not pickups. (Is the F150 still the best selling vehicle in the USA?)

We did buy Tesla's or at least we used to, until the EV market bubble burst about a year ago.

@Minty
As I understand it Ford and other car makes are now the same in every country. So the US Focus, Puma and Mustang are the same as the ones here. But you are right we don't buy many pickups, probably because they seem so pointless and ridiculous . But the Ford Ranger is apparently the most popular car in Australia. Over there they call them a Ute for some reason that escapes me.
However, you know what they say the difference is between a hedgehog and a pickup truck? With a hedgehog the pricks all are on the outside.
