I am looking into transferring my videos of family holidays, birthdays etc for long term storage and also for converting onto DVD. Problem is, I don't know what's the best way to do it. I've looked at TV input devices but don't which is best and as I have a laptop, it should ideally be an external device. Does anyone have any good ideas or has anyone done this before?

Also, do I need any specialist software?

Thanks in advance

The first thing you should think about is how you wish to achieve this
If you plan on using your PC then you need a decent graphics card and plenty of space on your hard drive as video eats up your hard drive like you wouldn't believe.

you also need some software to be able to capture the video that you wish to convet to DVD and edit it with some special effects if you wish.

another way is to get yourself a dvd recorder that you can plug in your digital video camera, video 8, or VHS machine into with phono, scart or dv connections

that will do ok, but your editing capabilities are limited.

I use my pc to edit with and if I have to edit VHS footage I first copy that onto my DV camera as there is no quality loss then transfer that to my PC using the DV input.

Lets say you connect the VHS recorder to the DVD recorder using a scart.

I have several 3hr videos I'd like to put on DVD CD - any clues on how many 3hr videos can fit on a DVD CD?

That would depend on the format chosen and the quality you decide to save at

I once put 3 hour Talking Heads videos onto one dvd and the quality wasn't too bad, it looked like you were watching VHS quality movies as apposed to dvd quality.

I think it was about 3 hours long or so.

My dvd recorder also has High definintion quality which apparently is better than DVD
so a 1 to 2 hour movie takes up about 7 or 8 gig which is stored on the hard drive, it then compresses it to 4/7 gig if I want to save it on DVD.

Pinnacle Systems provides studio quality software and hardware. They offer external devices to accomplish the tasks that you are trying to do.

However there are shareware apps that will do it but usually finding an all in one app that is shareware is a pain.

Google DVD Digest for a link to a site that talks about this in depth and has links for shareware programs.

I use Pinnacle Systems. I have an older version of Studio, I think it's 8.33 or something, but Studio 9 is out, I've been contemplating getting it because it has support for Dolby Digital 5.1 audio tracks.

If you are not going to go with Pinnacle I would suggest staying away from PCI cards that have TV tuners and anything that is a WinDevice. I struggled throught the market and eventually went with Pinnacle becuase I found out that you get what you pay for in this case. My moral was, spend the money to get the good stuff, because the cheap stuff was too much of a hassle.

I've done a number of projects,
1. Put StarWars Episode 4 on DVD before Lucas.
2. Made a graduation video from Pictures and sporting event home videos.
3. Numerous family vacation compilations.
4. (Nothing that the copyright people will come knocking on my door about)

There is going to be a learning curve with whatever you decide to go with, and I don't want to send traffic to another site, but this site doesn't really have the experts in this department. I suggest using the google link I refer to above.
