From way over here it seemed that one person, who seemed to be not very well liked or respected in the first place, ran an entirely negative campaign based on their views of the other candidate as a person and basically ignored the populace who were simply asking for basic things such as reductions in crime, stemming illegal immigration, creation of jobs and the squandering of tax dollars on things they saw as irrelevant to them.
The other person ran a campaign on promising the people they would address those very things.
This all may be a gross oversimplification, as we don't get that level of coverage of course but I was in no way surprised how this panned out.
