See if he has a gun and he sees you with a gun then he gets nervous and may shoot you instantly, but if you have a bat then he knows he has the upper hand and dosent have to shoot you unless you advance on him.

In all seriousness, this isn't the movies. If you are frightened enough to retrieve a weapon, you're not going to go all 'in 'da 'hood about it and waste time posturing. Do or do not, there is no try.

Ah you have changed the argument from my original assessment of people’s willingness or ability to kill without hesitation to one of effectiveness against PCP addicts.

As I asserted earlier most people without military training (and some with) will hesitate. So if you’re a women in a mall parking lot and a rapist is out for you a whistle and a can of professional strength pepper spray would be a significantly preferable defense over a handgun.

While I absolutely agree with you with the preference over a handgun, I do however know an unfortunate fact about pepper-spray, or mace, etc.

It is NOT 100% effective in all cases.

While this sounds like the beginning of an urban legend, my boyfriend's best friend's sister-in-law (whom I also happen to know, hence the non-legend status) is a police officer. As part of their training they get tear-gas or whatever it is sprayed into their faces. She and/or her husband (also a copper) didn't have any reaction to it. It happens in between 3-10% of cases. Not a statistic that is particularly comforting when being a woman in a car park at night....

I agree with you, and what if the woman ends up killing the rapist, now thats something i would think would be harder to forget if the rapist in term didn't even manage to take her clothes off. In europe they have female only car parks right near the exits how thats controlled i dont know but the point is there are other ways to deal with somthing like this than just shooting the guy.

If they are completely unarmed, your baseball bat is valid, but if they have a knife, you may use a gun if you are in genuine fear of your life or that of your family. You can't shoot the guy for an unarmed raiding of your icebox. One other important distinction, which varies from state to state, is at what point the intrusion implies deadly intent. In Pennsylvania, the assailent must be inside the home. In New Hampshire, the law merely states that the intruder must be within the curtilage.

Wow, having read through many forums with people from the UK and US commenting back and forth, the great majority of UK posts rely completely on stereotypical concepts of the American people...mostly brought on with absolutely no personal experience..you say you have based your opinions partly from forum posts by Americans...strangely enough, most of the American postings you reply to and comment about are Americans defending themselves from your juvenile anti-US comments. Basically what that does is make your opinion on us wrongfully justified in your mind, because your US post readings consist mostly of people you are currently in mid argument with.
