We have an Emperor's New Clothes situation. Everyone is afraid to say what they really think because they are afraid they will be called names or even fired from their jobs. This is the part that is reallllly hard to get past. People aren't willing to risk their jobs and the well being of their family for the sake of taking a moral stand. This is what would stand in the way of an actual civil war. In the 18th century, very few people worked for "the man". Most worked for themselves so they were very much harder to cancel. My husband and I always had a lot of professional freedom since we were both in IT and we each made more than enough money to easily support a family of four in a middle class style. Many of our friends bought McMansions and leased new cars every year and went on fancy vacations whereas we lived very comfortably but basically stuck to what one income would support. We kept our cars for at least 5 years, longer if we really liked them. We took nice vacations but we rarely flew first class, we didn't eat out at expensive restaurants 5 nights a week, etc.
