Unfounded charges against UK abattoirs

From the archive, first published Monday 27th Aug 2001.

I WOULD like to reply to the letter from Saffron Box (You Say, August 20) in which she made a number of unfounded allegations about procedure in British abattoirs.

We have the most stringent animal welfare regulations in the world.

Veterinary surgeons and trading standards and RSPCA officers are present to see that the highest standards are maintained.

If Ms Box really believed in animal welfare she would campaign to ban the import of cheap, inferior quality foreign meat, so often raised in very poor conditions.

Attempting to blacken the name of British farmers will achieve nothing for livestock either here or abroad.

Ms Box plainly supports the case for animal rights - she is one of a small but extremely noisy minority.

Vegans actually make up less than half a per cent of the population. Yet more and more they seek, by whatever means, to make the rest of us join them in their chosen way of life.

She is obviously unaware that livestock plays a vital role in maintaining our countryside. Without them, much of our diverse flora and fauna would be lost.

The reintroduction of cattle to the meadows by the Severn in Worcester is a prime example.

These animals will maintain a rich pasture full of insects and wild flowers, good for the environment and pleasant to walk by.

We listen to Ms Box, not only at the peril of our countryside, but also of many of the animals that live there.

JON BURGESS,

Malvern.

This thread has really gone to the pot!

Here here. Back to the matter at hand.

Ahem.

Rich, you're a dirty rotten no good scoundrel, and nobody likes you.

Die in a fire.

Rich, you still haven't replied to my question...

that's just about the most evil bloody tasteless thing I've ever read on this forum

And if you took it seriously, then that's my fault and I apologize.

Hey only I can call him that!! and latter is not true. He may be a pain in the butt, most of us here like 'em. So 'nobody' is not an accurate statment.

Die in a fire.
Now now kilo, that was not very nice. Yes we all go at each others throats, but we are a big family here. That was no need to wish harm upon any member of this forum.

That is actually a huge fear of mine!! *shutters* I would NEVER wish that upon anyone.

Ok, sorry my female/mommie side kicked in. I rushed to the rescue!

Thanks for apologizing. That was a big boy! :D

Okay! In case you hadn't noticed rich and I have been exchanging (hopefully) meaningless insults for the last two pages now. This insult and subsequent curse are meaningless, and I am sorry about the fire thing. It's something that a friend of mine used to say, and I forget that that kind of sarcasm doesn't transmit well. Again, I apologize.

I had, as I stated in the above thread, I rushed in and I apologize for jumping the gun.

I enjoy a good battle of witt too, but sometimes it gets taken to far.

Again, my mommie side kicked in and I apologize. No harm no foul!!

I admit that I thought it was a bit harsh, even in jest. But I'm glad you can be the bigger man and apologize. That's more than we can say about SOME people around here. ;) :D

Anyone fancy doing this?

You know that the Brits started this :

Early 18th century

English settlers on the Northeast coast of Newfoundland begin sealing using nets. Whitecoated pups are hunted in the spring, when the ice brings the whelping herd within walking distance from shore. Harp seals are also hunted later in the season using small boats and guns.

1723 -Seal hunt becomes a recorded annual event.

Large quantities of seal oil are shipped back to Britain to be used as fuel for lamps, as lubricating and cooking oil, in the processing of leather and jute, and as a constituent in soap.

Hmmm interesting response.:)

Firstly, the Sunday Mirror seems to have been slammed as being a tabloid (which it is) and therefore all news is to be disregarded. May I say, this story has been reported in several newspapers and is also on the BBC news website here.

Secondly, Selena your quote
Do you really feel us Americans are that barbaric
seems a touch paranoid, I didn't mention Americans, I merely quoted a newspaper article and asked Ken (in his opinion as a hunter gatherer) if this was hunting. . . . . . . .still not answered by Ken BTW.

Then Matty wades in with his export / money bit. Again displaying paranoia to the extreme - its not the culling thats the problem, its clubbing them with stoneage clubs that's the problem. If they were culled humanely, then there would be no problem. I'm sure Canada makes alot of dosh selling seals penis's to Asia.;)

Then along comes the old "how do UK abbatoirs kill things?" - answer? the same as US ones do I should imagine, inspected and tightly regulated.

Dan-Cat obviously hasn't much to say, (for once) and falls back on Kenny's "The Mirror" slam.
Dan-Cat said:
The Daily Mirror of course is a non-profit organisation
ignoring the possibility that perhaps even US papers may report the story.

Then we get loads of name calling - culminating in a comment I never want to see again here - a poster wanting another to "die in a fire". An apology was given, (fair enough) but I would prefer it to be deleted, I was shocked when I read it. I have worked in Burns Units and have seen the results of burning flesh - its not something even to say in jest:mad: .

So to sum up - the majority of US posters assumed the initial post was aimed at them and fought back in a predictable paranoid fashion:D even resorting to 18th century seal hunting. Whereas the UK posters merely were trying to determine if there was a better way to cull seals, by asking for American opinion based on the US love of hunting.

Accepted and I'm not vindictive, however I feel you should carry out some community service.
First you're to travel to Canada and join in the protests against this barbaric blood lust.
Secondly on your return to the States you are to set up road signs warning drivers of the presence of deer in the area, you are to participate in the strict enforcement of speed limits in the area. You can also assist with the prosecution of careless drivers, driving without due care and attention will suffice.
Thirdly you are to set up deer rescue centres
Fourthly you are to pop around to Seli's gaff and stand guard over her plants, using audible deterrents to keep them secure, you can of course shoot the squirrels.

So that makes it ok then?

I take it that your comment is a bash at the Canadians for not having the intelligence to update their methods of culling seals:rolleyes:

Its the old "we've done it this way for nearly 4 centuries - and thats that!" thing I presume;)
