Gun laws do they work

In reply to the Open vs. Concealed question. It depends on where I am going and teh season. If I am on my way to Wal-Mart in Summer, I open carry and have found that it was a deterrant to criminals as in one case where thugs passed me up and stole the purse from another lady instead of my wife.

If I am going to a formal event or area where there is a lot of gang activity, I conceal. In the case of formal events, it just seems appropriate. In teh case of high crime / gang areas, I realize that there is always someone bigger and meaner than me and I don't want to invite them to take a trophy.

In response to the "Has anyone ever shot someone" question:
I have not shot anyone, ever. I have been in three justifiable use of force situations in my life and found a way to disarm and detain my attacker rather than to take their life or to draw my firearm. This is not something that most people take lightly. Being prepared with deadly force does not mean that it is the first choice made. Remember police are people too, they can be corrupted just as easily as any one else. They still use a contiuum of force while on duty and I beleive citizens should exercise the same caution.

Human life is valuable, even if it's messed up.

When you "open carry", which I'm guessing means carrying a gun openly on show. Do you wear a holster like John Wayne?

Or to put it another way, where do you carry it so it is seen openly?

Still nobody actually shot anyone yet?

@ColinEssex

I use a level two holster on my right hip.

Level two holster requires releasing a retention clip before drawing the weapon which helps prevent people from just grabbing it or havingit fall out if a hand to hand encounter happens. There are varying models with thumb breaks on the inside and finger levers on the outside. I like thumb breaks better.

I think Sketchin hit the nail on the head. It's a social issue. In the US, we have a large amount of crime and much of it comes in from outside our borders. There was a shipping container found recently from the islands that had hundreds of illegal guns. If we outlaw guns, what's to stop the criminals from obtaining them? Nothing. They will still find a way. The argument that having legal carriers makes it easier for criminals to get them is of course true, but how many people legally own guns today compared to the number that end up in criminal hands from legal means? The statistics are complicated to justify that as a valid excuse to have more gun control.

Also, murder may be at a lower rate per capita in countries without guns, but what about other types of crime. Statistically, you usually see a much higher number of random acts of violence, armed robbery, car theft, and mugging in countries where guns are banned than in countries where they are not. Do you think that having legal gun owners in the US lowers the chance of being a victim of a random act of violence because criminals don't know if the potential victim may be a carrier? Most murders are not random acts of violence, but thought out and planned. If someone wants someone dead, they will find a way, with or without guns. Random acts of burglary and car-jacking on the other hand are completely random more often than not.

While I agree with you that there is a lot of social problems that are the root cause of these killings, I also firmly believe it is 'opportunity ' that is the greatest culprit. Chicago and Washington DC have the strictest gun laws in the U.S.A. yet both have the highest death rate by gun in the nation. It is awful easy to shoot at a target and imagine it is the enemy your shooting at. However, if that enemy can shoot back at you, it becomes a different story. 'Total' Gun Control is not the answer.

Have a Nice Day:)

Looks like on average 140-180 US gun owners shoot themselves every month.

Here's examples January through May of this year....

Everybody and his brother should have at least one gun. This is the only way to rid the world of silly pranksters: http://wtvr.com/2013/09/08/colorado-teen-shot-and-killed-in-prank-gone-wrong/

Deaths like this are bad and there is no way I can say anything to alleviate the pain the family feels. My condolences to the family and friends.

With owning a gun, brings with it certain responsibilities. Yes, there are gun accidents, there are bike accidents, there are motor accidents, etc. Again a lot of them are cause by not following the simple responsibilities that come with the use of these items.

How can I say it, if you own a gun, it is your responsibility to make sure it is used in the way it was intended to do, This includes your family or families friends.

To have the government try to protect you in the absence of personal weapons (guns) is in my opinion like putting the fox in the hen house.

Have a nice day:)

That reads like you would shoot anyone including your friends and family. Would you really shoot a person?

Nobody has fessed up to shooting anyone yet despite the macho fake words American men use on these forums.

Do try to use proper English words, and an occasional comma.

There is a responsibility that comes with owning a gun. This goes for family and family friends. Proper use whether hunting or target shooting. Cleaning, handling, storing are all part of that responsibility. Why are you so worried about us Americans shooting someone. As I stated before, I have not to this date shot anyone either as a civilian or in the military. With Gods help, I never will. Having said that, I am prepared to neutralize any situation that might come along.

There is a responsibility that comes with owning a gun.
Responsibility for anything is now an unfashionable concept in US.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The recent shooting at the Navy Shipyard in Washington, DC has reinvigorated the gun control debated. The Washington Post had this misguided editorial: After Navy Yard shooting, gun laws must be scrutinized. What is wrong with this editorial and the renewed calls for gun controls is that this incident is a security failure.

First, Mr. Alexis, the shooter, should not have had a security clearance. Second, (I am assuming that Mr. Alexis had to pass-through a security check-point) that the security personnel at the check-point failed to discover the weapon that Mr. Alexis was bringing in. New laws concerning gun control do not address failed security procedures.

I heard something yesterday about the number of toddlers that have been accidentally killed by guns, one of them shot someone with his sisters 'first gun' which was pink. That they have things like this is just unbelievable whether you believe in people owning guns or not.

Obviously gun control doesn't work too well when you already have a hundred million guns in circulation, so unfortunately the U.S is in a bad place, however they should still introduce strong gun control because it will make a difference in 50-100 years time, you have to start somewhere. It wont stop crime, it wont even prevent murder but it sure will make it much more difficult to kill 20 innocent kids !

Actually there are many times that amount

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_guns_are_in_the_united_states_of_America

The FBI estimates that there are over 200 million privately-owned firearms in the US. If you add those owned by the military, law enforcement agencies and museums, there is probably about 1 gun per person in the country.
If you want to get a rough idea of how many guns there are out there just look at how many people you see out there then multiply by a factor of estimated ownership. The last best guess was about 350,000,000 Total. That would be 1 weapon for every man woman and child. The average gun enthusiast owns several firearms which includes pistols, shotguns, and rifles of all makes and models. It is often estimated that about 1 in 4 people own any firearms and on average firearms owners own 4 guns each.

No one knows the exact number of firearms owned by private citizens in the US, In 1995, the BATFE estimated that there were about 223 million firearms owned by individuals in the US. The number has increased since then.
There is no definitive answer, because most states don't require registration.

The Small Arms Survey in 2007 by the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva estimated 270 million firearms in the US.

There have been 156,577,620 gun registry applications submitted to the National Firearms Administration (NFA) from Nov 1998 to Nov 2012.

If the facts floating around on this forum are accurate about less gun shootings per population in the UK than US and I suspect they are accurate, I would venture a guess that there is less stabbing, less death and savage beating by blunt objects, less attacks by motor vehicles etc. in the UK per population than US. Then that would give a hint that the gun is not the problem but the culture.

Does anybody truly believe that this not a cultural issue, but a knife issue?
