Gun laws do they work (1 Viewer)

Responsibility for anything is now an unfashionable concept in US.

-------------------------------------------------------------

The recent shooting at the Navy Shipyard in Washington, DC has reinvigorated the gun control debated. The Washington Post had this misguided editorial: After Navy Yard shooting, gun laws must be scrutinized. What is wrong with this editorial and the renewed calls for gun controls is that this incident is a security failure.

First, Mr. Alexis, the shooter, should not have had a security clearance. Second, (I am assuming that Mr. Alexis had to pass-through a security check-point) that the security personnel at the check-point failed to discover the weapon that Mr. Alexis was bringing in. New laws concerning gun control do not address failed security procedures.

Yes, and they (democrat-liberals) will not stop until one day they will tell everyone he has written an executive order prohibiting the ownership of a gun. That could pose a big problem for I doubt that anyone who owns a gun will give it up like they did in UK or Australia.

Have a nice day :)

Gun laws...do they work...very interesting question!

My opinion is that they do not work. People that buy guns do not neccessarily have criminal background or a criminal record. So they would be able to get a permit no problem. I agree that there needs to be something in place...I believe that the current laws are limited.

How do you account for a somewhat normal person that already has purchased gun legally and then something bad happens in their life and they just "SNAP"

I think that many people are on the verge of snapping because they have not found the true answers or solutions to today's problems and anxieties. Some people turn to drugs and other vices and unfortunately some turn to horrible measures as we have seen recently in the news.

Very Interesting question.....Thanks

Yeh as always nothing is simple and clearly the culture is one of many factors but the concept of being 'normal' and legally obtaining a gun and then snapping would result in someone in Australia having a bolt action rifle with a magazine that holds 5-10 rounds, not a semi automatic military rifle ! As you say the culture will still lead to people being killed but it'll be a lot more difficult to kill 20+. I mean seriously there is no legitimate reason to own a semi automatic or full auto military rifle, it's a joke.

True....I agree!

In the U.S. fully autos are registered guns. Like the Thompson machine gun from WWII, these guns have a history and are owned by law abiding citizens that have taken the trouble to register them.

The semi-auto rifles, shotguns are a part of our American life. One might say a lever action rifle is the same as an semi-auto in that they can be fired rapidly enough to keep one's head down if your on the receiving end.

Most semi-automatic rifles are .22 cal. Yes, this is the same caliber of the .223, only smaller in knock-down power. Don't be fooled by it apparent lack of power. It has kill far more deer in this country than any other weapon available.

NOW, Who has the auto weapons in the world and U.S. . The crooks,. Mafia and any other person that simply wants one. If they take them away, the black-market cost simply go up.

When you bleeding heart liberals, take all the guns away from everybody including all the countries of the world (they are the biggest arms dealers around), I would dare say that all the law-abiding citizens will give you their guns. Until then, you going to have a hell of a time getting them from the masses by any means. Continuing this conversation is ridiculous since it serves no purpose to beat a dead horse.

Have a nice day:)

I believe they (Australia) had a mass slaying of people in a school by a bomb several years ago when guns were still present.. If they want you dead they are going to find a way to make it happen unless you can stop them first. Rem, We still do not live in the Utopia, its just a state of mind.

There a people in this forum who like to use statistics to prove a point. However, they will not give you the statistics on the number of guns in the U.S. vs the slayings. Yes, one child is too much, but then we had 3000+ men, women and children die on 9:11.01 That was also too much. With the law some 5-30 or more minutes away, protecting yourself and your family without a gun would be simply a practice in futility. I am not going to lay down and die for no-one human peaceably.

Our constitution says we can have them, we are going to keep them.

Have a nice Day:)

Semi Auto, machine guns, military grade weapons or just your run of the mill hand gun....to me...stressing me (my opinion)....it doesn't matter

The problem is you cannot foresee when someone will lose it with whatever weapon. There are people who are law abiding citizen who use their weapons responsibly.

What know one can control is the increasing anxieties of the world. It has an effect on all of us. Loss of job, death of someone close to us, illness and many others all have a negative effect. What effects one person may effect another differently.

I think that weapons will always have a side effect and unfortunately that side effect, sometime ends up in horrible situations.

Mankind does not have the ability correct this issue so in this system of things it will continue to exist.

I'm done...

It's a year since the Sandy Hook massacre, there have been others since, but this one seems to have grabbed the headlines, why, I have no idea.

Do americans remember things like this? Or is it just put down to bad luck and instantly forgotten.

Has anything happened re gun laws or restricting sale of guns?

.

But you see it does matter, what those of us who are saying that the gun laws need revision and stricter enforcement say is that with a handgun and a limited supply of ammunition the mass slayings are much more unlikely to happen.

Gun control does not mean banning guns.

The idea that if someone wants to kill then they with find away is just such a pathetic argument, why make it easier.

Bladerunners introduction of the September 11th into the argument just illustrates how desperate and immoral the gun lobby is.

WHY????/ Liberals and their bleeding hearts. They believe in Utopia and cannot see that it has been tried many times before with no success.

The media , most all the northern states, Ca. and Colorado are very liberal. Ask yourself this. Why do these shootings mostly happen in the Liberal states. WHy---by declaring there is no immediate security you invite the very thing they say should not happen if all guns are abandoned.

Merry Christmas to all; May Jesus Christ bring light to your life before you die.

Have a nice day :>)

TO my old friend Brian: Merry Christmas to your post, Ba-HumBug

Killings such as this matter to all of us and no I am not part of the gun lobby. NY, Chicago Washington DC, have the strictest gun laws in the U.S.

Washington has the dubious title of being worst in the nation for murders with firearms. Yet, their citizens cannot own a firearm legally.

Chicago has the next most murders, yet their laws permit someone to own a gun, they cannot have it outside of the home and

NY you can have a firearm with a permit only. They have the third largest number of murders in the states. They (NY) also have a much controversial search based upon you race and maybe you just look bad. They confiscate many illegal pistols this way but it fails to stop the murders that put they in third place. You cannot even transport a gun in the car(unloaded) in the state.(changed this year). Almost 9000 fire arm murders in 2010 in an area of 350,000,000.

It seems your own laws in the UK are pretty strict. Talk about not banning guns is to lull you into a false sense of security. Only the farmers and a few others can have a firearm and most of them of single and double barrel shotguns. You still have gun murders

Banning guns is not the answer, Limiting ammunition is not the answer.. It would have to done world wide and what are the odds on that happening.

There will be no Utopia simply because of the human nature and still the world will keep on spinning.

Have a nice day:>)

I am currently reading a biography on Phil Spector ( the record producer).

Apparently in the late 1970's, he had an interview with the New Musical Express, and he was asked about his fascination with guns. (Apparently he had many and always carried one wherever he went) anyway, his answer was "it's better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have one".

This posed several questions in my mind.

a) how often do you need a gun?

b) has anyone on these forums ever used a gun in anger?

c) is that comment he made like a mantra to Americans?

d) Is he still in jail for shooting someone?

e) is the need of a gun precipitated by having one?

Col

A question.

Is it possible to fire a gun underwater? Like if swimming or taking a bath with a gun in the water.

Oh, and nobody want to answer my previous questions?

Col

Clint Eastwood did it in one of his early films, so it must be possible I suppose.

Oh, and I don't look at links, I prefer the personal answers.

Col

I see there was another mass shooting yesterday at a shopping mall in Maryland.

Does it get reported on US news? Or is it as insignificant most other murders in the US.

Americans seem to treat death as a non event.

Col

Col;

It is not a casual event in the US. It is unfortunate that we have these issues here. It does indeed get reported through all printed, visual and audio media. Politically, here it is a very hot issue. Gun control is a topic that has very divided points of view. In a Republic, as we have in the US, freedoms are important and debated hotly and many are protected under the first 10 amendments to our constitution, commonly referred to as the Bill of Rights. If you have not read them, you may find it of interest. http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/bill_of_rights_transcript.html
