Coronavirus - are we all doomed?

John,
Are you back in the US?
Hey there Jack! I went home Feb 29 to see my ailing mother in SC. I virtually had to sneak out of Italy on a AirForce plane (AMC flight) because it flew directly to the US and just about every county in Europe would not let passengers from Italy enter without quarantine.

I was able to see my family and was scheduled to fly back to Italy on the 15th...

...but...

Being a US government employee, I was "encouraged" to fly back sooner before Trump put the clampdown on all government travel to category 3 countries with just about all of Europe is now, especially Italy. I complied only to be immediately quarantined to my house in Italy because my flight had a stop over in Munich.

The incompetence and inconsistency is overwhelming.

latest report that 160 employees of our local hospital are quarantined.
we are more than likely going to be told to stay home from work at the government building for the next ''X'' weeks. we were told today of this. fortunately, we are still going to paid even though we won't be working. in minnesota, the governor has shut all public places down and issued unemployment benefits for all!

Couple of things.

Why are Americans panic buying guns? We see on TV queues of people waiting outside gun shops. I would have thought something more beneficial would be favourite, like food etc.

Second, is now a good time for TV to show the Dustin Hoffman film 'Outbreak'?

actually colin, i was thinking the movie called Contagion. =) and YES, they are buying food. Wal Mart stores are completely out of rice, the one in my area anyway. there is a large asian population in this area, and thus they are hoarding the food of their land.

In these apocalypse movies, there is always lawlessness. Maybe that is why they are buying guns. They anticipate the worse and a big rise in crime.

I actually got a phone call yesterday from an old colleague asking if I had a spare clip for a Glock. Very odd phone call.

You touch upon a point there, Jon. Growing up in the deep south (Georgia), there was always a mistrust of all forms of government. Even though there was no reason to feel the need to take up arms, the possibility of it exists and it was customary to be prepared. I realize it makes no sense and seems extreme to most of the world, but to a young boy growing up this was just the way it is.

I do own a 16 gauge shotgun but it is primarily for varmint control and home defense. I do not trust myself with a pistol due to my temper...gotta know yourself and be true.

Now to your point; everyone knows in rural America that if the fecal matter comes in contact with the oscillator, hoarding, foraging and looting becomes reality. Being able to keep what you have from those who want to take it from you in priority one.

In the UK, part of the governments thinking is that police may only deal with serious crime if there is a mass outbreak of the corona.

I've got a couple of predictions for this year:

1. A domino effect with the collapse of business. Restaurant goes bust > Supplier goes bust > workers laid off > mass unemployment > deep recession.

2. A multi-peaked wave of infection cases. Cases rise, you get the lockdown, cases then slowly fall to low levels. Then people feel less scared, so they go out again. Cases rise, it peaks again. New lock down. And so on.

Happy days.

In these apocalypse movies, there is always lawlessness.
the man of lawlessness from the scriptures is also supposed to be able to perform miracles. now whether that is going to come in the form of KNOWING what ignorant people will do because of AI's progression is unknown. My own thought is that he will simply do miraculous things like Christ did, in the same manner Christ did. But they will be performed from brain power rather than from a sincere and faithful heart.

<-- Willing to trade S&W 9mm for 2 rolls of Toilet Paper.
LOL... classic. have you tried the "seashell" method of wiping from the movie ""Demolition Man"" with Stallone? =)

I always thought of the red & white corncob method. You use a red corncob to scrape your way clean. Then you use the white one to see if you need another red one.

As to buying guns, I saw an article that clearly stated the people were getting guns to protect their businesses from looting. They were interviewed so their motive for the purchase wasn't a guess.

that makes perfect sense richard.

How do you hold on to your food? The local bobbies going to show up at your flat and say "please give Col back his biscuits"
He's a jolly good chap.

As the knuckle-dragger makes off with your stash.

We have three cases in our county in California (they are not talking much about them). The store shelves are getting emptied out. Idiots are in the parking lots selling items at an inflated cost (and sometimes getting arrested). Fortunately other needing a loaf of bread and some cheese we have all the other items we need.

Well, it seems odd to me that the first thing Americans think is 'I must buy a gun because I intend to shoot someone who steps on my property'

someone sent me this so I have no idea if it's a meme or the truth or somewhere in between but I thought it was interesting reading:-

Thanks Tony, assuming all that is accurate, that is some good news...

I just got an email that someone in my office is in quarantine for 2 weeks. Of course they wont say who, as it is a hippa issue. They have not been able to get a covid test. Ugh.
Glad I have Netflix, Hulu, Prime, and Disney+.
