Coronavirus - are we all doomed?

Whoo! Another blast from the past. And a blast from the past from the blaster, at that.

Furthermore have you guys seen that Santa Claus can actually be tracked on computers nowadays?

Adam, if you play the video, you see the BeeGees, a singing group of three brothers fronted by Barry Gibb (hence the group's name). The other brothers were Robin Gibb and Maurice Gibb. In the mid-to-late 1970s they were extremely popular.

That music in the video comes the movie Saturday Night Fever, which is a story about a particular disco-dance-oriented sub-culture in Brooklyn, NY, that was popular among young adults in the 1970s. The movie starred John Travolta.

But now Adam, I have another question for you about "who is in the picture." I switched to my real picture some time ago. Is that your real picture in the forum? Because it looks a lot like Skyler Astin from Pitch Perfect.

Not to mention:

(hence the group's name)
Hmmm, I've read that is a common misconception and the name was derived from the initials of Barry Gibbs and Bill Goode, who was their promoter when they moved to Australia.

yes that's my real picture, richard. but it was taken a while back at a jazz festival here in this town. I have nothing recent. tera asked me the same thing a long time ago. probably because he didn't believe it was me either. but since he's got me on ignore, he won't be seeing this message.

I changed my mind and un-ingord you. For three reasons.
  1. I thought it's kind of being selfish not to hear different opinions and way of thinking.
  2. I didn't see your posts while ignoring you, but there was a lot of replies to your posts from other members that made no sense. Because I didn't know what are they replying to. And it made me put @The_Doc_Man and a lot more of others too in my ignore list. The list were growing too long and I was missing a lot of posts from a lot of members. I thought it's simpler not to read the whole water cooler and concentrate on technical areas.
I'm very busy with my job recently. I will post a thread for the whole third reason. But it won't be until a week or two later.

743 deaths in Italy yesterday. This is FAR from being under control.

@NauticalGent The death data can be a bit misleading regarding the trends. I think there is a 21 day lag between the shutdown and reduction in deaths. Let me explain. The average time from infection to death is 21 days. So, if they shut down the country 20 days ago, you would still see rising deaths. After day 21, it would start to fall, all in theory of course. Do you know the date that they shut everything down over there?

The best way to see if things are improving is to look at the Daily New Cases rate. This shows if the infections are reducing or not.

You can see that those have started to fall. That is a positive sign.

The death rate should fall approximately 2 weeks after the Daily New Cases rate falls, since it takes on average 2 weeks to die since onset of symptoms.

I hope that helps give some clarity on the situation over there, or how to calculate the situation anywhere. Bear in mind that in places like the UK, we are very short of testing kits so the true scale of the numbers infected is harder to know, but at least with this method you can spot the trends.

The rate of testing will vary and not be in parallel to the rise in the number of cases. The real number of cases is more like 10x what the public tested figure is.
