All known creatures that have any mentality at all have a group mentality in some degree, from ants to whales. We evolved in a predatory environment where membership in a group proffered a survival advantage. The intelligence level of the creatures in question governed the degree of the ability for members of the group to go on their own, but even for humans there are evolutionary holdovers that make us "follow the herd." Therefore, if you are accusing humans of "group think" you are not wrong but also aren't bringing up anything new.

If you want to see proof of that in humans, look at early teenagers in middle school or high school and the cliques they form. Look at the bullying that goes on for those who don't "fit in" with the "in" crowd.
